Dry winter air and sticky summers are the same measurement

Static shocks in February and a clammy house in July are both humidity, and the equipment that fixes each one is different.

Comfort is not temperature alone. A house at 72 degrees can feel cold and raw in January and heavy in July, and in both cases the number that changed is relative humidity. The workable range indoors is roughly 30 to 50 percent, and a hygrometer costs very little.

Winter: heating dries the air

Cold outdoor air holds almost no moisture. Heat it to room temperature and its relative humidity collapses. That is why the symptoms are seasonal and universal: static, cracked woodwork, dry skin, and a house that feels colder than the thermostat says. A whole home humidifier tied into the ductwork addresses the cause. Portable units treat one room.

Summer: the air conditioner is the dehumidifier

Cooling removes moisture as a side effect of running long enough for the coil to condense it. An oversized system reaches temperature quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to do that, which is why an oversized unit produces a cold clammy house. If summers feel damp despite the system keeping up on temperature, sizing and run time are the place to look before anything is added.

Filtration is a separate question

  • A higher MERV filter captures more, and also restricts more airflow. Fitting one the blower cannot pull through trades air quality for capacity.
  • A media cabinet with a deeper filter gets both, because the larger surface area drops less pressure.
  • Ventilation, filtration and humidity are three different problems. Anything sold as fixing all three at once deserves a specific explanation of how.
